The arrival of an ambulance ended their conversation as medics shouldered through the group hovering around Noah. He caught Emilyâs eye. âIf you arenât coming with me, Iâm not going anywhere.â
âDonât be silly. Iâll check in with the chief and be along as soon as heâs briefed me on the latest female victim.â
âWeâre going to need a long list to keep everybody straight,â Noah quipped cynically.
âTwo lists, the way I see it,â Emily said. âOne for the blonde women and another one for you.â
Rather than disagree, he chose to change the subject while one of the medics took his blood pressure. âWell, there is one good thing about what just happened.â
She made a sour face. âI can hardly wait for you to tell me.â
Noah gave a soft chuckle, realized it hurt and stopped. âMy back has completely taken my mind off my arm. I donât even feel the stitches anymore.â
With an exaggerated roll of her eyes and a loud âAargh!â she turned and left him to the ministrations of the paramedics.
One of them appeared at his elbow with a clipboard. âIf you wonât let us transport, youâll need to sign this release.â
âWhat would they do if I went to the hospital? Same things you just did, right?â
The medic grinned. âYup. Maybe an X-ray, too. And ice packs. Youâre gonna be plenty sore.â
Noah grabbed the pen and signed. âThanks guys. Appreciate it.â
The medic stripped off a blue surgical glove and offered his hand to Noah. âHang in there, man.â
Shaking hands, Noah read his name on his shirt and noticed that his gaze had followed Emily across the room so he asked, âYou know her, too..., Mark?â
âAs much as sheâll let me,â Mark said.
A jolt of jealousy that hit him out of nowhere. He cleared his throat. âEmily and I go way back.â
âMaybe thatâs your secret. I donât know.â
âMaybe she already has a man in her life.â
âHah! She seems friendly enough until you try to get close to her.â
Lowering his voice to speak aside, Noah said, âI heard she lost her fiancé.â
âShe did. I was one of the medics who worked on him. But that was years ago.â
âYears?â It surprised Noah to hear that so much time had passed. âHow many?â
Mark shrugged. âI donât know. Maybe five.â He sighed. âItâs been a while.â
âI see. Not that thereâs a time limit on grief.â
Agreeing, the medic nodded. âI think sheâd have done better if she hadnât tried to do CPR on him before we got there. She was a basket case when we pronounced him.â
Adding to her misplaced sense of responsibility, Noah thought. That figured. So did her transference of blame. Whether she realized it or not, she was probably angry at God, too. There were stages of grief, he knew, and it was possible to get stuck and struggle to move on. Everybody was different.
Could he help her come to grips with the loss that had apparently shaped her life for the past five years? Was he the right person to
